Where it comes from
Lorem ipsum is a garbled, abbreviated version of a passage from Cicero's "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (45 BC), a treatise on ethics. The standard block traces to typesetters who scrambled the Latin centuries ago to produce realistic-looking dummy text, and it spread widely after Letraset transfer sheets in the 1960s and desktop-publishing software like PageMaker reproduced it. The familiar opening — "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit" — is itself corrupted Latin: the opening "Lorem" is a truncation of the original "dolorem" ("pain"), which is why the phrase begins mid-word.
The point of using nonsense rather than real text is that meaningless words do not distract the reader. A designer reviewing a layout filled with readable English tends to read the words; filled with lorem ipsum, the eye assesses the shape, length, and rhythm of the type instead of the content.
