The pages a site says it has
The sitemap is the site's own list. That list is what gets counted.
A sitemap file: one loc entry per address inside a urlset; the checker keeps the three pages on the site and skips the feed, which is not a page.
A sitemap is one XML file naming the addresses a site wants found, one per page. The number here is that list, filtered the way a crawler filters it: this domain only, real pages only, each address counted once.
Feeds, PDFs, images, scripts, and the sitemap file itself are not pages, so they leave before the total. So do search, cart, account, login, tag, and author paths. What is left is pages a reader can land on.
robots.txt first, then the sitemap
Follow an index into its child sitemaps, within the check’s limits.
Where the checker looks: first robots.txt, whose Sitemap line names the sitemap; then the sitemap itself, here an index with two child sitemaps that together list 142 pages.
Verant reads robots.txt for a Sitemap: line, then tries /sitemap.xml. A sitemap index is followed into its children within the check's request budget of 12 documents, including robots.txt and the index. Gzipped sitemaps are unpacked. The result shows each document checked, including failed reads.
Counting stops at 2,000 pages. Past that the answer says the site has at least that many rather than inventing a total. If nothing answers, it says that too: a site with no sitemap still has pages, and only a crawl can find them.

How do I count the pages on a website?
Enter the address above. Verant reads robots.txt, then /sitemap.xml and the child sitemaps an index names, within a request budget of 12 documents in total. Counting stops at 2,000 pages or when a check limit is reached. Nothing to install, no account.
What if the site has no sitemap?
Then this tool cannot count it, and it says so instead of guessing. The pages still exist and can still be reached by following links, which is how a full-site scan finds them. Most CMS platforms generate a sitemap for you; look for a setting, a plugin, or a /sitemap.xml route.
Why is the count lower than the number of addresses in my sitemap?
The count keeps pages on the same domain and drops the rest: feeds, files that are not pages, search and cart and account paths, and repeats of an address already counted. It also stops at 2,000 pages. The result shows both numbers, so you can see what was read and what was kept.
Is this the same as the number of pages Google has indexed?
No. This is the site's own list, not a search engine's index, and the two rarely match. A sitemap can name pages that were never indexed, and a search engine can index pages no sitemap mentions.
What are the sections in the result?
The first part of each page's address, counted: /blog, /docs, /products. A total on its own says little; where the pages actually sit is usually the part worth knowing.
Does it check the pages for errors?
